If you received your plant via UPS:
Carefully open box. If you use a sharp object to slice tape, use care to not penetrate the box too deeply. Sometimes our plants are packed in a way that the canes might be wrapped arond the inside of the box and twisted to fit the container, careful not to damge them!
Most of the time we ship plants with the root ball in a plastic bag. You will want to pot up the plant immeadiately and wet the leaves. If you are not able to pot right away, place in a shady spot out of any wind and wet the leaves. You might also pierce the bag and wet down the root ball as well. After potting your bamboo, continue to mist leaves as often as possible, wet the root system in the container twice daily. Shipping is very stressful on bamboos especially during the hot season.
After a few days, graduate the plant to broken sunlight and eventually to full sun continuing your same watering schedule. After 5-7 days from the day you potted your plant, it is ready for planting!
If you are receiving your plant with no soil (you will be notified if this is required):
Due to agricultural restrictions from state to state you may be required to have your plants shipped this way. You will need to prepare a potting mix.
I recommend a loose, light, and textured mix. Air circulation to the roots and a quickdraining mix makes bamboos very robust and happy. Here are some options: A perlite-peat-vermiculite mix with barks and mulches. (Any commercial mix can work if it is light and fluffy).
I use 50% rose/azalea mix (shredded pine, sand, volcanite) with 50% perlite-peat-vermiculite.
Open your shipping container immeadiately. Follow the instructions above for opening the shipping container. You will receive your plants wrapped in plastic bags. Immeadiately mist all leaves and begin to pot your plants. Remove them from the bags taking great care not to damage new shoots or the rhizome sytem. Do not expose any of the root system to sunlight or wind. Keep them wrapped in wet paper towels or cover them while they wait their turn to be potted. Potting MUST be done immeadiately after receiving them.
After potting keep the plants outside in full shade with no wind. Mist leaves as often as possible, water them 2-3 times daily for 7 days. Spend the next 7 days graduating them from broken sunlight to full sun, still continuing your watering schedule. It is normal to loose some leaves or have some leaves tan up. Misting is very important! You do not want your bamboo to drop all of its leaves, it could die! After two weeks from the day you potted your plants, they should be ready to plant!
